From Strangers to Yarn Friends – Crochet Friendship is Real
Crochet has a beautiful way of stitching people together, even those who start as complete strangers.
Like so many crocheters, I started watching countless hours of YouTube tutorials, studying stitches, and feeling inspired by the creators who shaped my early crochet journey. Their videos and voices were my teachers, their photos were my inspiration, their makes were a reminder of what was possible with yarn, crochet hook, and a little patience.
From the beginning of my crochet journey up until now, I silently admire and look up to wonderful designers such as:
Sarah of @repeatcrafterme
Stephanie of @allaboutami
Ashley of @acraftyconcept
Jessica of @the.hook.nook
Wilma of @wilmade
Lee of @coco.crochet.lee
Laura of @happyberrycrochet
These women were the first people I followed and from the Philippines, these makers felt like distant stars that I admire from afar. Meeting someone like them felt like a lovely but unrealistic dream.
Life, however, surprises us in mysterious and in beautiful way.
After moving to Hungary for love, for my boyfriend (now my husband!), that old fantasy somehow relived and with that tiny spark of hope returned. Thinking, maybe — just maybe, I’d meet one of them. But still, I never truly expected my world and theirs to intersect.
Until one small “hello” through Instagram DM moment changed everything.
One Message brings Change
One day, I had an itch to message Laura from HappyBerry Crochet because I remembered seeing her post that she visited Hungary before. On a whim, and of course with a mixture of hesitation of hope, I sent her a simple message.
No expectations at all. No plan, no strategy, just a simple hello and introducing myself warmly.
That tiny moment of courage turned into something unforgettable. That itch became a real blessing. She replied.
What began as exchanged DMs soon turned into something wonderful: an invitation for coffee.
I could not imagine things would lead this way and I never thought being privately invited by someone like HappyBerry.
Woolshie meets HappyBerry
It was a chilly Sunday in Budapest when we decided to meet at a Filipino restaurant in the city center. A kind of a day where warm drinks feel like a necessity.
I remember spotting her from afar, sitting calmly on a bench outside the restaurant. With every step I took, my thoughts raced – the familiar “what ifs” raveling my mind.
But the moment she turned, I waved to her and she waved back at me. We were both smiling at each other and everything softened. Suddenly, it felt like meeting an old friend.
The thought of awkwardness, distance, and nervous turned into a warm feeling. What followed was not a meeting of “content creators”, but simply two women sharing real life stories – about navigating visa processes, adjusting to new cultures, learning hungarian language, and the beautifully chaotic journey of motherhood.
Crochet may have brought us together, but life built the connection.
Impromptu Yarn Adventure
Anyone living in Hungary, even foreigners, know one important weekend reality: On Sunday, most shops – especially yarn shops – are closed.
But luck was on our side that day. A hobby craft store inside a nearby mall was still open, which led us to an impromptu yarn adventure. After coffee, we hopped on a tram, continuing our conversation as if we had known each other for years.
When we arrived at the shop, excitement cannot be obvious enough. Our crochet hearts were full of joy. Upon stepping into the yarn section felt like entering a familiar universe.
We touched yarns like every crocheters do, every yarn skein sparked discussion, the textures, color palettes, fiber preferences, and even project ideas for every yarn that caught our eye.
It was one of those simple yet deeply meaningful moments where excitement is shared over something so small, yet so personal. That quiet joy only fellow yarn lovers truly understand.
The Yarn Challenge
Somewhere between shelves of cotton and acrylic yarns, a playful idea emerged. Laura came up for a yarn challenge.
Laura selected yarns for me, and I did the same for her. We challenged each other to create something from other’s choices. It’s like the project we wanted to make but the other will do it. It is a fun and creative exchange which I cannot wait to share more about very soon.
Reality and Dream
That Sunday remains unforgettable to me. Not just because I met someone I truly admired, but because I experienced something far more meaningful, a genuine connection.
This is a reminder that behind every crochet designer account is a real person. That creative communities are not just digital spaces. That friendship can grow in the most unexpected yet special ways.
Crochet friendship is real.
It crosses borders. It ignores distances. It disregards races. It quietly waits for moments of courage like a simple hello message.
And sometimes, it begins with coffee and yarn.

Gentle Wish for Lunar New Year
One thing I carry from this experience:
Community is one of the greatest gifts of crafting. Whether you are a beginner, a long-time maker, or someone rediscovering crochet after years away, there are kindred spirits out there, connected by yarn, creativity, and shared joy.
Friendship can begin anywhere. Even with strangers. Even with yarns.
May every crafter find a friendship like this, one that starts with yarn and grows into something beautiful.
Because in this community, we don’t just make things. We make connections, memories, and friends.
